Neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus plays a major role in cognitive ability of animals including learning and memory.Korean red ginseng (KRG) has long been known as a medicinal herb with the potential to improve learning and memory;however,the mechanisms are still elusive.Therefore,we evaluated whether KRG can promote cognitive function and enhance neurogenesis in the hippocampus.Eight-week-old male C57BL/6 mice received 50 mg/kg of 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU) intraperitoneally and 100 mg/kg of KRG or vehicle orally once a day for 14 days.Pole,Rotarod and Morris water maze tests were performed and the brains were collected after the last behavioral test.Changes in the numbers of BrdU- and BrdU/ doublecortin (DCX;a marker for neuronal precursor cells and immature neurons)-positive cells in the dentate gyrus and the gene expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (a marker for cell differentiation),cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor and ciliary neurotrophic factor in the hippocampus were then investigated.KRG-treated mice came down the pole significantly faster and stood on the rotarod longer than vehicle-treated mice.The Morris water maze test showed that KRG administration enhanced the learning and memory abilities significantly.KRG also significantly increased BrdU- and BrdU/DCX-positive cells in the dentate gyrus as well as the proliferating cell nuclear antigen,cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor and ciliary neurotrophic factor mRNA expression levels in the hippocampus compared to vehicle.Administration of KRG promotes learning and memory abilities,possibly by enhancing hippocampal neurogenesis.This study was approved by the Pusan National University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (approval No.PNU-2016-1071) on January 19,2016. 展开更多

Dynamic property tests of frozen red sandstone using a split hopkinson pressure bar 预览

In this study, frozen red sandstone specimens were impacted by a Split Hopkinson bar (SHPB), with a velocity of 4.558 ~ 6.823 ms-1. The temperature of the specimens was maintained at -15℃ during the experiment. For comparison purposes, static uniaxial compression tests were conducted in advance using a freezing triaxial test machine. Four stress-strain curves were obtained in diff erent average strain rates. The test results suggested that when the average strain rate is low, the specimen strength changes gradually;but when it is high, its strength changes rapidly. When the average strain rate is 120.73 s-1, the peak value of stress is as high as 82.96 MPa, which is about two times that of the static compressive strength of 44.1 MPa. A constitutive model was established that was composed of the damaged, viscoelastic and spring bodies, and revealed the variations of compressive strength and strain for the frozen red sandstone under diff erent high strain rates. The test results also showed that the failure form was correlated to the average strain rate of the frozen red sandstone. When the average strain rate is low, the damage was only distributed on the specimen’s edges. However, as the average strain rate increases, the damage range extended to the central parts of the specimen. When the average strain rate reached 107.34s-1, the specimen was smashed. 展开更多

BACKGROUND In spite of developing medical technologies to discover the etiopathogenesis of diseases and developments in the treatment of coronary artery disease,acute coronary syndromes (ACS) continue to be the main cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide.New cardiac biomarkers and techniques are needed to help provide rapid diagnosis in order to evaluate risk in coronary artery patients.AIM To evaluate the effects of R to S ratio (RSR) in the electrocardiograph of patients with ACS,from the point of the arising complication after myocardial infarction (MI),to three-vessel disease (TVD) and mortality.METHODS The data of 1,296 patients with ACS,who presented to the emergency department of our hospital with chest pain between January 2014 and December 2018 and were admitted to the cardiology clinic,were retrospectively included in this cross-sectional cohort study.Patients with an RSR value less than Ⅰ were assigned to group I,while those with an RSR value greater than Ⅰ were assigned to group Ⅱ.RESULTS In our study,466 (35.9%) of the 1,296 patients,357 (38.3%) in group 1 and 109 (29.9%) in group 2,were female,with a mean age of 61.56 ± 9.42.ST-elevation MI 573 (44.2%),unstable angina (UA) 502 (38.7%) and non ST-elevation MI 220 (17%) were more prevalent in group I.Acute anterior MI 263 (20.3) in group I,and acute inferior MI 184 (14.2) in group Ⅱ was higher.Ischemic heart failure was the most common complication.In group Ⅱ,the red cell distribution width (RDW) was 15.42 ± 1.82,the gensini score was 48.39 ± 36.44,the left ventricular ejection fraction was 41.17 ± 10.41,the TVD was 111 (8.5),and the mortality rate was 72 (5.6),which was significantly higher than group Ⅰ RDW;in MI with ST and non- ST-elevation,in TVD,mortality and complications were high and low in UA.In single and multivariate regression analyses,the variables were associated with ACS risk.CONCLUSION RSR levels may be an auxiliary predictive value in ACS in terms of complications developing after MI,TVD,and mortality. 展开更多

As novel dark red pigment,sodium manganese phosphate,NaMnPO4,imitated with Natrophilite,was synthesized by heating at various conditions.The heating temperature and time,volume of water,phosphorus resource were studied in this process.The obtained powders were estimated with X-ray diffraction(XRD),Infrared(IR)spectra,ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis)reflectance spectra,and L^*a^*b^*color space.Further,similar chemical compositions with NaMnPO4 were also studied in the same method.The obtained samples had weak peaks of NaMnPO4 in XRD patterns.Sample synthesized in Na/Mn=1/1 at 700℃for 6 hours indicated high redness,a^*value. 展开更多

Undoped and Ni–S co-doped mesoporous TiO2 nano materials were synthesized by using sol–gel method.The characteristic features of as prepared catalyst samples were investigated using various advanced spectroscopic and analytical techniques.The characterization results of the samples revealed that all the samples exhibited anatase phase(XRD),decreasing band gap(2.68 eV)(UV–Vis-DRS),small particle size(9.2 nm)(TEM),high surface area(142.156 m^2·g^-1)(BET),particles with spherical shape and smooth morphology(SEM);there is a frequency shift observed for co-doped sample(FT-IR)and the elemental composition electronic states and position of the doped elements(Ni and S)in the TiO2 lattice analyzed by XPS and EDX.These results supported the photocatalytic degradation of Bismarck Brown Red(BBR)achieved with in 110 min and also exhibited the antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus(MTCC-3160),Pseudomonas fluorescence(MTCC-1688)under visible light irradiation. 展开更多

We report the experimental realization of quantum degenerate Fermi gases of87Sr atoms under controlled 10-and dual-nuclear-spin configurations.Based on laser cooling and evaporative cooling,we achieve an ultracold Fermi gas of 105 atoms equally distributed over 10 spin states,with a temperature of T/TF = 0.21.We further prepare a dual-spin gas by optically pumping atoms to the mF = 9/2 and mF = 7/2 states and observe a slightly lower T/TF than that for a 10-spin gas under the same trapping condition,showing efficient evaporative cooling under a decreasing number N of spin states(N≥2)despite the increasing importance of Pauli exclusion.Given that rethermalization becomes less efficient with N approaching unity,we evaporatively cool an almost polarized gas to 130 nK.The simple and efficient preparation of ultracold Fermi gases of 87Sr with tunable spin configurations provides a first step towards engineering topological quantum systems. 展开更多

Lycopene, one of the strongest natural antioxidants known and the main carotene in ripe tomato, is very important for human health. Light is well known to be one of the most important environmental stimuli influencing lycopene biosynthesis;specifically, red light induces higher lycopene content in tomato. However, whether blue light promotes lycopene synthesis remains elusive and exactly how light stimulation promotes lycopene synthesis remains unclear. We applied supplemental blue and red lighting on tomato plants at anthesis to monitor the effect of supplemental blue and red lighting on lycopene synthesis. Our results showed that supplemental blue/red lighting induced higher lycopene content in tomato fruits;furthermore, we found that the expression of key genes in the lycopene synthesis pathway was induced by supplemented blue/red light. The expression of light signaling components, such as red-light receptor phytochromes(PHYs), blue-light receptor cryptochromes(CRYs) and light interaction factors, phytochrome-interacting factors(PIFs) and ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5(HY5) were up-or down-regulated by blue/red lighting. Thus, blue and red light increased lycopene content in tomatoes by inducing light receptors that modulate HY5 and PIFs activation to mediate phytoene synthase 1(PSY1) gene expression. These results provide a sound theoretical basis for further elucidation of the light regulating mechanism of lycopene synthesis in tomatoes, and for instituting a new generation of technological innovations for the enhancement of lycopene accumulation in crop production. 展开更多

Correlates of extinction risk in Chinese endemic birds 预览

Background: China has a relative high degree of endemism of birds due to its large area, diversified topography, and varied climates and habitats. Among the 77 Chinese endemic birds, 29 species are classified as threatened according to the officially released China Biodiversity Red List in 2015. Chinese endemic birds should be the focus of conservation because their local extinction in China means complete global extinction. However, to date, no study has explicitly examined the patterns and processes of extinction and threat in Chinese endemic birds. Methods: We obtained eleven biological traits and four extrinsic factors that are commonly hypothesized to influence extinction risk. After phylogenetic correction, these factors were used separately and in combination to assess their associations with extinction risk. Results: We found that 37.7% of Chinese endemic birds were listed as threatened (Vulnerable, Endangered and Critically Endangered). Small range size, high hunting vulnerability, and high human population density were important predictors of high extinction risk in Chinese endemic birds. Conclusions: Our study is the first to systematically investigate the patterns and processes of extinction risk in Chinese endemic birds. We suggest that endemic species with small range size and living in area with high human densities require conservation priorities. Conservation efforts should also focus on the reduction of human threats, such as human hunting and habitat degradation, for the effective preservation of Chinese endemic birds. 展开更多

In order to improve the control of land use in China,taking Sunan Yugur Autonomous County in the Qilian Mountains area as an example,this paper explores the method of national ecological space delimitation and zoning based on ARCGIS platform. Three kinds of space division techniques are formed to unify natural resources survey data,carry out land spatial suitability evaluation,delimit three kinds of space and optimize natural ecological space division. According to existing laws in China,based on ecological protection red line,natural ecological space is divided into ecological protection red line and general ecological space. According to the regulation requirements and the functional division of various protected areas,the red line area of ecological protection is divided into core protected area,ecological restoration area,traditional utilization and recreation area with the area of 3 947. 28,3 216. 89 and 6 936. 56 km2,respectively. In view of the prominent problems in the process of delimitation and zoning of natural ecological space,some suggestions are put forward,such as unification of chassis,optimization of ecological protection red line and coordination and unification of management boundary. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Severe acute pancreatitis(SAP)is a common condition in the intensive care unit(ICU)and has a high mortality.Early evaluation of the severity and prognosis is very important for SAP therapy.Recently,red blood cell distribution(RDW)was associated with mortality of sepsis patients and could be used as a predictor of prognosis.Similarly,RDW may be associated with the prognosis of SAP patients and be used as a prognostic indicator for SAP patients.AIM To investigate the prognostic value of RDW for SAP patients.METHODS We retrospectively enrolled SAP patients admitted to the ICU of the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University from June 2015 to June 2017.According to the prognosis at 90 d,SAP patients were divided into a survival group and a non-survival group.RDW was extracted from a routine blood test.Demographic parameters and RDW were recorded and compared between the two groups.The receiver operator characteristic(ROC)curve was constructed and Cox regression analysis was performed to investigate the prognostic value of RDW for SAP patients.RESULTS In this retrospective cohort study,42 SAP patients were enrolled,of whom 22 survived(survival group)and 20 died(non-survival group).The baseline parameters were comparable between the two groups.The coefficient of variation of RDW(RDW-CV),standard deviation of RDW(RDW-SD),Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II(APACHE II)score,and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(SOFA)score were significantly higher in the non-survival group than in the survival group(P<0.05).The RDW-CV and RDW-SD were significantly correlated with the APACHE II score and SOFA score,respectively.The areas under the ROC curves(AUCs)of RDW-CV and RDW-SD were all greater than those of the APACHE II score and SOFA score,among which,the AUC of RDW-SD was the greatest.The results demonstrated that RDW had better prognostic value for predicting the mortality of SAP patients.When the RDW-SD was greater than 45.5,the sensitivity for predicting prognosis was 77.8%and the specifi 展开更多
