Coordinating ecosystem service trade-offs to achieve win–win outcomes: A review of the approaches

Ecosystem service(ES) trade-offs have been broadly recognized and studied over the past decade. However, how to coordinate the relationships among ES trade-offs to achieve win–win outcomes remains a considerable challenge for decision makers. Here, we summarize the current approaches applied to minimize ES trade-offs for win–wins and analyze the trade-offs among different ESs and their drivers. Based on a systematic review of the literature from 2005 to 2018, we identified 170 potentially relevant articles, 47 of which were selected for the review,recording 70 actual or potential trade-offs. Analysis of these case studies showed that trade-off pairs between provisioning services and regulating services/biodiversity accounted for 80% of total pairs. Furthermore, more than half of the ES trade-offs were driven by land use/land cover changes. Harvest and resource demand, natural resource management, and policy instruments were also among the main drivers. Four approaches to coordinate ES trade-offs were identified, including ecosystem, landscape-scale, multi-objective optimization, and policy intervention(and other) approaches. Based on the above, we recommend a rigorous understanding of the roles of different stakeholders, spatial scales of management, trade-off dynamics, and integrated implementation of diverse approaches to coordinate ES trade-offs in order to better achieve win–win outcomes. 展开更多

The ecosystem service value of Jingtaichuan electric power irrigation engineering( referred to as Jingdian engineering) was divided into internal value( the value of farmland system,shelter forest system outside of farmland and wetland waters) and external value( the ecological service value of ecological migration to the vegetation restoration of the Qilian Mountains) firstly,and then it was analyzed by using the model method and the factor equivalent method. The results showed that the internal ecological service value of Jingdian engineering was 36. 3 ×10~8 yuan,which was 25. 0 times larger than the total annual cost. The external ecological service value was 40. 05 ×10~8 yuan,which was 27. 6 times larger than the total annual cost. Among the three functional systems,the ecological service value of farmland system was the largest. The ecological service value of farmland system was mainly reflected in waste disposal,wind prevention and sand fixation,and food production. The external ecological service value was mainly the ecological service value of migration to vegetation restoration in the Qilian Mountains. Jingdian engineering is the only highlifting project that raises water to the desert in China. It transfers water from outer basins to control desertification and provides a successful road for ecological migration and desertification control in arid areas. 展开更多

Smart, real-time, low-cost, and distributed ecosystem monitoring is essential for understanding and managing rapidly changing ecosystems. However, new techniques in the big data era have rarely been introduced into operational ecosystem monitoring, particularly for fragile ecosystems in remote areas.We introduce the Internet of Things(IoT) techniques to establish a prototype ecosystem monitoring system by developing innovative smart devices and using IoT technologies for ecosystem monitoring in isolated environments. The developed smart devices include four categories: large-scale and nonintrusive instruments to measure evapotranspiration and soil moisture, in situ observing systems for CO2 and d13 C associated with soil respiration, portable and distributed devices for monitoring vegetation variables, and Bi-CMOS cameras and pressure trigger sensors for terrestrial vertebrate monitoring. These new devices outperform conventional devices and are connected to each other via wireless communication networks. The breakthroughs in the ecosystem monitoring IoT include new data loggers and longdistance wireless sensor network technology that supports the rapid transmission of data from devices to wireless networks. The applicability of this ecosystem monitoring IoT is verified in three fragile ecosystems, including a karst rocky desertification area, the National Park for Amur Tigers, and the oasis-desert ecotone in China. By integrating these devices and technologies with an ecosystem monitoring information system, a seamless data acquisition, transmission, processing, and application IoT is created. The establishment of this ecosystem monitoring IoT will serve as a new paradigm for ecosystem monitoring and therefore provide a platform for ecosystem management and decision making in the era of big data. 展开更多

The terrestrial carbon(C) cycle plays an important role in global climate change, but the vegetation and environmental drivers of C fluxes are poorly understood. We established a global dataset with 1194 available data across site-years including gross primary productivity(GPP), ecosystem respiration(ER), net ecosystem productivity(NEP), and relevant environmental factors to investigate the variability in GPP, ER and NEP, as well as their covariability with climate and vegetation drivers.The results indicated that both GPP and ER increased exponentially with the increase in mean annual temperature(MAT)for all biomes. Besides MAT, annual precipitation(AP) had a strong correlation with GPP(or ER) for non-wetland biomes.Maximum leaf area index(LAI) was an important factor determining C fluxes for all biomes. The variations in both GPP and ER were also associated with variations in vegetation characteristics. The model including MAT, AP and LAI explained 53%of the annual GPP variations and 48% of the annual ER variations across all biomes. The model based on MAT and LAI explained 91% of the annual GPP variations and 92.9% of the annual ER variations for the wetland sites. The effects of LAI on GPP, ER or NEP highlighted that canopy-level measurement is critical for accurately estimating ecosystem–atmosphere exchange of carbon dioxide. The present study suggests a significance of the combined effects of climate and vegetation(e.g.,LAI) drivers on C fluxes and shows that climate and LAI might influence C flux components differently in different climate regions. 展开更多

为从微观尺度分析不同农地整治模式对农户生态系统服务依赖度的影响及其差异,该文通过构建农户生态系统服务依赖度指数体系(index system of farmer dependence on ecosystem services,IDES),基于湖北省4县(市)483份农户调查数据,采用... 为从微观尺度分析不同农地整治模式对农户生态系统服务依赖度的影响及其差异,该文通过构建农户生态系统服务依赖度指数体系(index system of farmer dependence on ecosystem services,IDES),基于湖北省4县(市)483份农户调查数据,采用双重差分模型对比分析整治区与未整治区、新型农业经营主体主导模式整治区与地方政府主导模式整治区农户生态系统服务净收益和依赖度的差异。结果表明:农地整治后,整治区农户的供给服务收益、调节服务收益、文化服务收益、生态系统服务收益和其他社会经济活动收益分别增加33.20%、5.34%、35.09%、32.12%和33.23%,其中新型农业经营主体主导模式整治区分别增加53.06%、5.40%、33.33%、49.33%和42.40%,地方政府主导模式整治区分别增加6.46%、5.25%、38.89%、8.24%和27.02%,而同期未整治区分别增加17.01%、4.66%、22.34%、16.85%和22.98%;整治区农户的供给服务指数、调节服务指数、文化服务指数和生态系统服务依赖度总指数分别发生-28.60%、-21.05%、-6.45%和-26.91%的变化,其中新型农业经营主体主导模式整治区分别发生-36.57%、-24.69%、-16.24%和-34.52%的变化,地方政府主导模式整治区分别发生-18.97%、-17.27%、+16.42%和-17.59%的变化,而同期未整治区分别发生-8.34%、-13.39%、-4.10%和-8.36%的变化。这表明农地整治是优化农户收入结构和降低农户生态系统服务依赖度的有效途径,且新型农业经营主体主导模式的农地整治的作用效果明显大于地方政府主导模式的农地整治,地方政府主导模式的农地整治的作用效果仍有上升空间。研究结果可为实现生态系统服务与家庭福祉在微观尺度的结合提供理论支持和方法借鉴,也为农地整治项目的合理持续推进提供政策启示。 展开更多

Mangrove area of Guangdong Province quickly increased from 2001 to now,and its area in 2014 was 19 824. 53 hm~2,in which Zhanjiang accounted for 72%. During 2001-2014,mangrove area of Guangdong Province increased significantly,in which the newly increased mangrove area in Zhanjiang,Yangjiang,Jiangmen,Zhuhai,Guangzhou and Shantou was larger,with obvious increase magnitude;mangrove area in east Guangdong during 2001-2005 increased quickly,while increase magnitude of mangrove area in west Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta was improved significantly after 2005. Additionally,mangrove species in Guangdong Province continuously decreased from south to north,showing as west Guangdong > the Pearl River Delta > east Guangdong. Socio-ecological vulnerability to climate change/variability in central rift valley,Ethiopia 预览

Climate change/variability and environmental degradation have increased in the central rift valley of Ethiopia,which in turn making the people inhabiting in that ecosystem more vulnerable to the impacts.The purposes of this study were to assess the vulnerability of households andagro-ecosystems to climate change and environmental degradation and the factors determining vulnerabilities in the central rift valley,Ethiopia.Data were collected between November 2014 and May 2015 by interviewing 355 respondents.This has been supplemented with focus group discussions and key informant interviews.The indicator and matrix methods were used to describe socio-ecological vulnerabilities.The resultsshowed that about 9%of the respondents were highly vulnerable to climate change/variability,and environmental degradation.Households in the lowland have the largest proportion of high vulnerable households(60%),while households in highland have the largest proportion of low vulnerable households(30%).In the lowland agro-ecology,the adaptive capacity component has contributed the largest share to household's vulnerability index to the impacts of climate change/variability and environmental degradation.The sensitivity component has higer contribution in highland agro-ecology and the exposure component in the midland agro-ecology.There were variations of income deviation between agro-ecologies that lead to variation in vulnerability of households.Household vulnerability index has shown a very light negative correlation with livelihood diversification index.The poorest households with little share of the total income distribution and with low livelihood diversity index,were the most vulnerable.The results showed that the highest exposure index on ecosystem functions and agricultural performance were in the lowland agro-ecology.This study highlighted the need to assess the social and ecological vulnerabilities in integrated approach as singling out one from the other is difficult.That is,social vulnerability impacts ecological vulnerabi 展开更多

Effects of plant diversity on greenhouse gas emissions in microcosms simulating vertical constructed wetlands with high ammonium loading

Wastewater with relatively high nitrogen concentrations is a major source of nitrous oxide(N2O) and methane(CH4) emissions and exerts multiple stresses on the environment.Studies have shown that plant diversity plays an important role in ecosystem functioning.However, the effects of plant species diversity on CH4 and N2O emissions under high ammonium(NH4+-N) loading rates remain unclear. In this study, a microcosm experiment simulating vertical constructed wetlands supplied with high NH4+-N water levels was established. The treatments included four species richness levels(1, 2, 3, 4) and 15 species compositions. There was no significant relationship between species richness and N2O emissions. However, N2O emissions were significantly reduced by specific plant species composition. Notably, the communities with the presence of Rumex japonicus L. reduced N2O emissions by 62% compared to communities without this species. This reduction in N2O emissions may have been a result of decreased N concentrations and increased plant biomass. CH4 emissions did not respond to plant species richness or species identity.Overall, plant species identity surpassed species richness in lowering N2O emissions from constructed wetlands with high NH4+-N water. The results also suggest that communities with R. japonicus could achieve higher N removal and lower greenhouse gas emissions than other wetland species. 展开更多

气候变化是全球变化的主要表现之一,它对全球陆地生态系统碳循环有着巨大的影响,具体表现在气温和降水两个方面。全球生态系统碳循环有多种影响因子,本文主要阐述NPP和土壤碳呼吸与气温和降水之间的关系。研究表明,气温与NPP表现出一定... 气候变化是全球变化的主要表现之一,它对全球陆地生态系统碳循环有着巨大的影响,具体表现在气温和降水两个方面。全球生态系统碳循环有多种影响因子,本文主要阐述NPP和土壤碳呼吸与气温和降水之间的关系。研究表明,气温与NPP表现出一定的纬度地带性;气候变暖会增加土壤呼吸,不过超过最适温度,土壤呼吸减弱,表现出一定的适应性;随着降水格局的改变,在不同时间尺度和地区上,NPP与降水关系也不同;在一定降水范围内,降水量对土壤呼吸的作用是不同的。水分对土壤呼吸的抑制作用会随降水的增加而减小。 展开更多
