Source apportionment studies are useful in understanding sources of pollution and can be used in health risk assessments to evaluate the human health impacts from air pollutants. This study reviewed and analysed available source apportionment studies of air particulate in South Africa in October 2016. Searches were performed using different databases for peer reviewed articles including Google scholar, Scopus, EbscoHost, Science Direct and National Research Foundation database. Source categories were identified and these varied depending on the sites where the research was conducted (rural, urban or remote) but biomass burning dominated. A total of 35 source apportionment records were found with the majority of studies in urban areas (60%) while industrial sites had the least number of records (17.1%). The period 2011-2016 had the highest number of records while 1990-1995 had only three publicly available studies. There is limited research on source apportionment studies of air particulate in South Africa, calling for more research in this area. 展开更多

Monitoring of Ultrafine Particles in the Surrounding Urban Area of In-Land Passenger Ferries 预览

Maritime transportation, widely used both in international transport of goods and touristic purposes, has been identified as a significant source of ultrafine particles (UFP). In-land passenger ferry is a source of UFP far less addressed;however, in locations with relatively high frequency of this transportation mode, it is expected that they contribute to an increase of their concentration. Moreover, the negative effects of UFP on human health and environment are known and therefore, monitoring UFP produced by ferries is vital to assess the degree of exposure of who work or live close to ferries’ terminals or downwind to their cruising path. This work aims to study the influence of in-land ferries activities on UFP in the urban/suburban areas near ferries’ terminals and downwind across the cruising path. The UFP monitoring campaign was carried out from September to December 2018 for 19 non-consecutive periods. The sampling sites were chosen in order to maximize measurements under downwind conditions and allow the association between ferry operation and UFP concentration response. Based on data collected, correlation analysis was performed between ferry’s traffic and particle number counting (PNC) of UFP, and also with meteorological variables. Results show an increase in PNC ranging from 25 to 197% during the third minute around a ferry movement and are moderate to positive significant correlations between PNC values and the number of ferry operations (r = 0.79 to r = 0.94), showing that UFP emitted by in-land ferries contributes to PNC increase. Moreover, negative correlations (r = -0.85 to r = -0.93) between PNC and wind intensity were also found. 展开更多

This is mainly due to production and consumption of fossil fuels. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions could affect human health and destroy vegetation through acid deposition and cause transboundary air pollution. Currently, there are no regional ambient SO2 and NOx regulations and control measures of many developing countries including GCC countries. This paper reviewed the experiences of the past acid rain pollution problems in United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and China. In addition, the plausible control measures through application of air pollution abatement technologies, market based regulations were discussed. The study recommended that suitable and locally based measures could be adopted by GCC states to prevent future occurrence of acid rain within the region and beyond. 展开更多

Air pollution is a primary environmental problem in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria due to oil spills including the gas emissions associated with industrial effluents. However, a good understanding and quantification of atmospheric parameters (wind speed, wind direction, temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation and cloud cover) that influence air pollution (CH4, NO2 and O3) concentrations in this region could assist in the mitigation and distribution of these pollutants. This work examines the influence of atmospheric parameters on the production and distribution of air pollutants in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria for the development of control strategies that will enhance the mitigation and amelioration of the significant impacts that these atmospheric pollutants could have on the populace in this part of the country. The CH4 and NO2 data utilized in this study were sourced from the European Space Agency (ESA), while that of tropospheric ozone (O3) was obtained from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the atmospheric parameters data were provided by the Nigeria Meteorological Agencies (NIMET), Lagos. The analysis of the daily pollutants (CH4, NO2 and O3) including the atmospheric parameters in this region of the Niger Delta for the period 2003 to 2010 was carried out using standard statistical approach including the graphical method, stepwise regression model, least-square method, and correlation analysis. The Mann-Kendal rank statistics was also utilized in identifying the meaningful long-term trends, validation and testing of the homogeneity of the concentrations of the pollutants. The results of the correlations of CH4, NO2 and O3 concentrations with their previous day’s concentrations showed a strong significance in regression analysis for both CH4 and O3. The coefficient of determination of CH4 and O3 was obtained as 0.654 and 0.810 respectively, while a very weak correlation was obtained for NO2. In this contribution is generated a base model with an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) which is later optimized, using a swarm intelligence technique, named Bacteria Foraging Optimization Algorithm (BFOA). Several experiments were carried with BFOA parameters, tuning them to achieve the best configuration of said parameters that produce an optimized model, demonstrating that way, how the optimization process is influenced by choice of the parameters. 展开更多

Land reclamation is gradually posing negative impact on man due to unplanned urbanization. A study was carried out on impact of land reclamation through sand mining of coastal communities in Ikate and Ilubirin in Lagos, Nigeria. Ten waters (8 surface and 2 groundwater sources), 10 soil samples and air were collected and taken for analysis. Results of water revealed concentrations lower than WHO (2017) and SON (2007) standards. Soil/sediment with average crustal value revealed Pb and Cd above standard values, which is attributed to anthropogenic influence on soils. Quality of air in the study was mainly particulate matter arising from the sea and reclaimed land in the surroundings of the environment with the highest Total Suspended Particulate of 0.8 mg/m3 in sulfur dioxide. This explains corrosion found on the roofs of the communities. Therefore, in the development planning adequate precautions should be put in place to avert environmental degradation. 展开更多

However, some studies conducted in West Africa show that air quality is a concern. Population growth and massive vehicles imports are contributing to the deterioration of this air quality. In this work, we present the modelling of desert aerosols using a CTM Polair3D-SIREAM. The objective is to evaluate the ability of Polair3D-SIREAM to reproduce observations of PM10 and Aerosol Optical Thicknesses (AOT). A simulation with Polair3D-SIREAM was carried out in West Africa, focused on Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) for 2007. The model of Marticorena and Bergametti (1995), MB95, was used to estimate desert aerosols emissions. The total emission of dust modelled is 52.2 Tg. For the evaluation of PM10, the simulated averages remained within the same orders of magnitude as the observed averages. Correlations are low in all the observation sites. The other indicators are similar to those found by Schmechtig et al. (2011). Performance criteria of Boylan and Russel (2006) are met for the observation sites of Ouagadougou and Ilorin (Nigeria). For the AOTs, the correlations are significantly improved, in particular, at the sites of Ouagadougou and Ilorin. Performance criteria of Boylan are met for all observation sites. However, the performance goals are only achieved for Ouagadougou and Ilorin. 展开更多

The maritime industry is currently facing the challenges of adopting new technologies and operational practices with stricter international, national and local rules in order to reduce exhaust gas emissions from ships. The most objective of regulations introduced and presented by the Worldwide Sea Organization such as International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is to lessen the commitment shipping makes to worldwide and local discharges. This paper analyzes emissions from marine engines and the process of waste exhaust gas formation and provides a summary of the emission reduction technologies to satisfy MARPOL NOx tier III and EPA tier IV rules. The results showed the possibility of achieving a valuable emission reduction percentage if future diesel engines are equipped with pre-treatment, internal-treatment and/or post-treatment techniques. Economics impact for medium and low speed for category 3 marine diesel engines is also presented. 展开更多

Investigating the changes in the air pollutants trends of an area is important as it helps in making further action plans for further implementation of control strategies. Time series analysis provides indication to analyze any effect of uncontrolled changes in pollutants. In this study, exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) and cumulative sum (CUSUM) analyzing methods are applied for detecting the trends and change in air pollutant concentrations in Kuwait. CUSUM method is effective in detecting shifts from average mean obtained by EWMA technique. The study aimed to investigate trends in major pollutants in three selective areas in Kuwait during the past five years. The data obtained from three monitoring stations in the study areas Ali Subah Al-Salem, Al-Mutla, and Al-Mansouriya for carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter—less than 10 micrometers (PM10), hydrogen sulphide (H2S), and non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC). Increase in CO and NMHC concentrations in the three areas and decrease in PM10, SO2, and NO2 concentration levels in non-industrial areas Al-Mutla and Al-Mansouriya are observed using CUSUM method. 展开更多

为了弄清冬季山谷风、海陆风对京津冀地区大气污染时空分布的影响,利用2016年12月地面加密自动气象站逐时观测数据和中国环境监测总站发布的逐时PM2.5浓度数据,计算平均风矢量场和平均PM2.5浓度场,分析山谷风、海陆风变化规律及其对PM2.... 为了弄清冬季山谷风、海陆风对京津冀地区大气污染时空分布的影响,利用2016年12月地面加密自动气象站逐时观测数据和中国环境监测总站发布的逐时PM2.5浓度数据,计算平均风矢量场和平均PM2.5浓度场,分析山谷风、海陆风变化规律及其对PM2.5浓度分布的影响.结果表明,在山谷风日,中午至下午谷风将位于河北太行山东部地区的污染物向北输送.傍晚以后,在北京西部、北部,以及河北太行山山前出现的山风与偏南风构成'人字形'辐合线,辐合线的汇聚作用使北京地区、廊坊,以及保定、石家庄、邢台等地大气污染加重.在海陆风日,下午至前半夜,河北中东部沿海地区出现东南向海风,深入内陆到达天津东南部地区,海风前缘区域大气污染加重;通过对中国科学院大气物理研究所铁塔0~325 m风向风速与PM2.5浓度时间变化关系分析,以及利用Cressman法插值得到的地面风向风速和PM2.5浓度二维格点场,分析北京地区重霾污染过程中近地层山谷风和海陆风对大气污染形成的影响:中午至下午,谷风将大气污染物向北京输送.傍晚以后,大气污染物在山风与偏南风形成的辐合线附近汇聚,在北京地区及以南地区形成PM2.5高污染区.凌晨至早晨北京被山风控制,大气污染物被吹离北京、滞留在北京以南至天津西北地区.冬季,山谷风的输送和汇聚作用使大气污染物以日为周期不断循环和累积,对北京地区至北京以南地区、河北太行山东部地区的大气重污染形成起重要作用. 展开更多

随着空气质量问题日益突出,国家通过建立全国碳市场、开征环境保护税等措施控制污染物的排放,各省市也通过实施减煤、限车、治源等手段推进大气污染治理.由于大气污染的区域性影响特点,实施联防联控是必然途径,但目前的区域间协同治理... 随着空气质量问题日益突出,国家通过建立全国碳市场、开征环境保护税等措施控制污染物的排放,各省市也通过实施减煤、限车、治源等手段推进大气污染治理.由于大气污染的区域性影响特点,实施联防联控是必然途径,但目前的区域间协同治理由于责任及利益划分不明而缺乏效率.以2015—2017年的高频空气质量指数(AQI)小时数据为基础,建立向量自回归(VAR)模型,根据脉冲响应函数确定城市间相互影响的程度,进而用方差分解方法测算各城市对区域内空气质量的贡献程度,以此量化各城市大气污染的外部性,从而在城市间进行合理的责任分摊.提出设立具备3个层级的组织结构实施大气污染联防联控,并建立辖区内大气污染结算机制. 展开更多

工业生产过程中颗粒物输送系统输运过程存在大量粉尘逸散的问题,其中溜槽是关键部件之一,成为了工作场所大气污染的源头。为了解溜槽内颗粒物的运动及流场情况,首先通过试验数据验证了Discrete Phase Model的适用性,之后利用Fluent软件... 工业生产过程中颗粒物输送系统输运过程存在大量粉尘逸散的问题,其中溜槽是关键部件之一,成为了工作场所大气污染的源头。为了解溜槽内颗粒物的运动及流场情况,首先通过试验数据验证了Discrete Phase Model的适用性,之后利用Fluent软件对溜槽内粒径为300~500μm、密度为700~2 800 kg/m~3的颗粒及斜抛初速度为2~6 m/s的不同工况进行了数值计算。结果表明,斜抛初速度对卷吸空气流场影响不大;初速度越大料流核心区颗粒物质量浓度衰减越慢,密度越小质量浓度衰减越快;整个斜抛过程中,颗粒速度先急剧减小,再急剧增大,最后保持稳定。溜槽下皮带落料点两侧形成正压区容易造成粉尘逸散,通过研究溜槽内颗粒物的运动规律及流场特性,为控制溜槽内粉尘逸散的工艺通风优化设计提供了理论依据。 展开更多
