Sleep-wake rhythm disturbances,which are characterized by abnormal sleep timing or duration,are associated with cognitive dysfunction.Photoacoustic treatments including light and sound stimulation have been found to be effective in modulating sleep patterns and improving cognitive behavior in abnormal sleep-wake pattern experiments.In this study,we examined whether light and sound interventions could reduce sleep-wake pattern disturbances and memory deficits in a sleep rhythm disturbance model.We established a model of sleep rhythm disturbance in C57 BL/6 J mice via a sleep deprivation method involving manual cage tapping,cage jostling,and nest disturbance.We used a Mini Mitter radio transmitter device to monitor motor activity in the mice and fear conditioning tests to assess cognitive function.Our results indicated that an intervention in which the mice were exposed to blue light(40-Hz flickering frequency)for 1 hour during their subjective daytime significantly improved the 24-hour-acrophase shift and reduced the degree of memory deficit induced by sleep deprivation.However,interventions in which the mice were exposed to a 40-Hz blue light at offset time or subjective night time points,as well as 2 Hz-blue light at 3 intervention time points(subjective day time,subjective night time,and offset time points),had no positive effects on circadian rhythm shift or memory deficits.Additionally,a 2000-Hz sound intervention during subjective day time attenuated the24-hour-acrophase shift and memory decline,while 440-Hz and 4000-Hz sounds had no effect on circadian rhythms.Overall,these results demonstrate that photoacoustic treatment effectively corrected abnormal sleep-wake patterns and cognitive dysfunction associated with sleep-deprivation-induced disturbances in sleep-wake rhythm.All animal experiments were approved by the Experimental Animal Ethics Committee of Drum Tower Hospital Affiliated to the Medical College of Nanjing University,China(approval No.20171102)on November20,2017. 展开更多

This study presents a development on a time efficient approach to measure the Acoustic Impedance of Industrial Insulating materials using an impedance tube with single moveable microphone and a white noise generator. The standing wave method is used to measure the acoustic properties (absorption coefficient and acoustic impedance) of sound absorbing materials. In order to use a burst of white noise instead of individual stationary sine waves, a signal processing technique was developed. The algorithm is based on the equation of simple harmonic motion, but uses distance as a variable, instead of time. This innovative method allows measuring at frequency resolutions as low as 5 Hz in a reasonably short amount of time. This is an advantage, as the classical standing wave method uses frequency resolutions of one-third of octaves for measurements, as otherwise time would be prohibitive. Experimental results are validated with those measured with the sine wave generator using one-third of octave frequencies by comparing their behaviours. 展开更多

In many engineering applications such as mining,geotechnical and petroleum industries,drilling operation is widely used.The drilling operation produces sound by-product,which could be helpful for preliminary estimation of the rock properties.Nevertheless,determination of rock properties is very difficult by the conventional methods in terms of high accuracy,and thus it is expensive and timeconsuming.In this context,a new technique was developed based on the estimation of rock properties using dominant frequencies from sound pressure level generated during diamond core drilling operations.First,sound pressure level was recorded and sound signals of these sound frequencies were analyzed using fast Fourier transform (FFT).Rock drilling experiments were performed on five different types of rock samples using computer numerical control (CNC) drilling machine BMV 45 T20.Using simple linear regression analysis,mathematical equations were developed for various rock properties,i.e.uniaxial compressive strength,Brazilian tensile strength,density,and dominant frequencies of sound pressure level.The developed models can be utilized at early stage of design to predict rock properties. 展开更多

Noise is one of the key issues in the operation of high-speed railways, with sound source localisation and its transfer path as the two major aspects. This study investigates both the exterior and interior sound source distribution of a high-speed train and presents a method for performing the contribution analysis of airborne sound with regard to the interior noise. First, both exterior and interior sound source locations of the high-speed train are identified through in-situ measurements. Second, the sound source contribution for di erent regions of the train and the relationships between the exterior and interior noises are analysed. Third, a method for conducting the contribution analysis of airborne sound with regard to the interior noise of the high-speed train is described. Lastly, a case study on the sidewall area is carried out, and the contribution of airborne sound to the interior noise of this area is obtained. The results show that, when the high-speed train runs at 310 km/h, dominant exterior sound sources are located in the bogie and pantograph regions, while main interior sound sources are located at the sidewall and roof. The interior noise, the bogie area noise and the sound source at the middle of the coach exhibit very similar rates of increase with increasing train speed. For the selected sidewall area, structure-borne sound dominates in most of the 1/3 octave bands. 展开更多

Congenital heart disease(CHD), one of the main causes of infant mortality, should be screened as early as possible. However, the current screening method, auscultation, strongly depends on the doctors’ experience,and the contradiction between limited medical resource and growth of population becomes sharp. This study presents a systematic approach for the conceptual design of a novel screening system. Research and interview are carried out to determine user requirements. Quality function deployment(QFD) with consideration of related products, patent and research is implemented to find out the key user requirements of existing screening device and the order of design descriptors. With the key requirements confirmed, several concepts which focus on satisfying the key requirements are brought out. The final concept of the screening system is chosen by the application of Pugh decision matrix. The implementation of the conceptual design shows that the designed system satisfies the user requirements well. 展开更多

The estimation of ocean sound speed profiles(SSPs)requires the inversion of an acoustic field using limited observations.Such inverse problems are underdetermined,and require regularization to ensure physically realistic solutions.The empirical orthonormal function(EOF)is capable of a very large compression of the data set.In this paper,the non-linear response of the sound pressure to SSP is linearized using a first order Taylor expansion,and the pressure is expanded in a sparse domain using EOFs.Since the parameters of the inverse model are sparse,compressive sensing(CS)can help solve such underdetermined problems accurately,efficiently,and with enhanced resolution.Here,the orthogonal matching pursuit(OMP)is used to estimate range-independent acoustic SSPs using the simulated acoustic field.The superior resolution of OMP is demonstrated with the SSP data from the South China Sea experiment.By shortening the duration of the training set,the temporal correlation between EOF and test sets is enhanced,and the accuracy of sound velocity inversion is improved.The SSP estimation error versus depth is calculated,and the 99%confidence interval of error is within±0.6 m/s.The 82%of mean absolute error(MAE)is less than 1 m/s.It is shown that SSPs can be well estimated using OMP. 展开更多

We construct a new effective field theory approach to the equation of state(EoS), dubbed pseudo-confomal model 'PCM', for nuclear and compact star matter entirely in terms of effective hadron degrees of freedom. The possible transition at n ~(2-4)n0(where n0 is the normal nuclear matter density) from hadron degrees of freedom to strongly-coupled quark degrees of freedom,giving rise to a soft-to-hard changeover in the EoS that can accommodate the massive stars observed, is effectuated by the topology change at n1/2>~ 2n0 from skyrmions to half-skyrmions without involving local order-parameter fields. The mechanism exploits possible emergence of hidden scale and local symmetries of QCD at high density, leading to a precocious 'pseudo-conformal'sound velocity vs2= 1/3(in unit of c = 1) for n>~ 3n0. The resulting prediction signals a drastic departure from standard nuclear many-body theory in the density regime involved in the massive stars. We suggest that the tidal deformability implemented in gravitational waves coming from coalescing neutron stars in LIGO/Virgo-type observations could pin down the location of the topology change density n1/2. 展开更多

The geometric parameters of micro-perforated panels with irregular holes cannot be directly known,making it difficult to calculate the sound absorption performance.Therefore,we propose a method of estimating the geometric parameters of micro-perforated panels.The irregular holes are treated as equivalent circular ones,and the model of estimating the geometric parameters is established by using Maa’s theory about the panel with circular holes.The result of the parameter estimation of a type of micro-perforated panel is used to predict the absorption performance,resulting in good agreement with experiments.According to the influences of the geometric parameters of the panel on the high absorption region,we discuss the relationship between the application limit of Maa’s theory and the geometric parameters,and investigate the evolution law of the sound absorption performance when the panel is polluted by dust.If the parameters of the panel are designed near the center of the high absorption region,large value of the application limit of Maa’s theory can be obtained;and if the parameters are located in the upper right part of the high absorption region,a certain degree of dust pollution of the panel does not decrease the sound absorption performance. 展开更多

This article highlights the fact that anorexia and bulimia nervosa aren't simply psychiatric disturbances, but recent identification of genetic linkages show that they are also physical disease, with higher incidences seen in children who have a parent with an eating disorder. Even having a relative with an eating disorder has become a predisposing factor. However, more research still needs to be carried out on this to establish clear patterns of inheritance. This paper also touches on the greater impact that eating disorders have on society as a whole. Past studies undertaken primarily in female patients have reflected a gradual increase in mortality rates which have been significant enough to be of epidemiological and statistical importance. We then focused on some new treatment approaches and observe an universal pattern of improvement among patients who were also treated with music therapy as compared to standard traditional treatment measures. Finally, we summarized the importance of awareness and education among young adults in preventing mental health disorders and eliminating the stigma around seeking therapy. 展开更多
