In recent years,self-expandable metal stents(SEMSs)have been employed to treat benign gastrointestinal strictures secondary to several conditions:Acute diverticulitis,radiation colitis,inflammatory bowel disease(IBD),and postanastomotic leakages and stenosis.Other applications include endometriosis and fistulas of the lower gastrointestinal tract.Although it may be technically feasible to proceed to stenting in the aforementioned benign diseases of the lower gastrointestinal tract,the outcome has been reported to be poor.In fact,in some settings(such as complicated diverticulitis and postsurgical anastomotic strictures),stenting seems to have a limited evidence-based benefit as a bridge to surgery,while in other settings(such as endometriosis,IBD,radiation colitis,etc.),even society guidelines are not able to guide the endoscopist through decisional algorithms for SEMS placement.The aim of this narrative paper is to review the scientific evidence regarding the use of SEMSs in nonmalignant diseases of the lower gastrointestinal tract,both in adult and pediatric settings. 展开更多

Highly sensitive methods are important for monitoring the concentration of metal ions in industrial wastewater.Here,we developed a new probe for the determination of metal ions by fluorescence quenching.The probe consists of hydroxylated graphene quantum dots(H-GQDs),prepared from GQDs by electrochemical method followed by surface hydroxylation.It is a non-reactive indicator with high sensitivity and detection limits of 0.01μM for Cu2+,0.005μM for Al3+,0.04μM for Fe3+,and 0.02μM for Cr3+.In addition,the low biotoxicity and excellent solubility of H-GQDs make them promising for application in wastewater metal ion detection. 展开更多

This flooring will allow residential structures to be built more quickly while also reducing the necessary thickness of the floor. The level of strength and deflection of this floor will be determined via analysis of a floor bed comprised of cold-formed inverted U sections (IUS) covered by sheathing that is subjected to different loading scenarios. The necessary computational quantities associated with the experiment have been compared to established laboratory values by performing all related and applicable tests. Then, these quantities are compared to different existing flooring techniques to determine the efficacy of this technique. The results show that this flooring technique can be effective and cost-efficient in residential applications. 展开更多

Nowadays, DNA-mediated metal nanomaterials have received more and more attention due to their distinctive properties of easy synthesis, high stability and good biocompatibility. As a kind of efficient template to mediate the precise synthesis of metal nanomaterials, DNA can not only increase their recognition and biocompatibility, but also precisely control their morphology, structure and further analytical performance. DNA-mediated metal nanomaterials as ultrasensitive and selective probes have unique advantages for in situ rapid analysis of targets in complex samples. Herein, we reviewed the recent progress on synthesis strategies, morphologies, specific properties of DNA-mediated metal nanomaterials including nanoparticles and nanoclusters. Moreover, the applications of DNA-mediated metal nanomaterials to environmental and biological analysis were also summarized. Finally, the developing prospect of DNA-mediated metal nanomaterials in analytical chemistry was discussed and proposed. 展开更多

An in teg rated approach combi ning den sity functional theory(DFT)calculati ons and atomic resol utio n sea nning tun neling microscopy(STM)is used to study well-defined iron-doped cobalt oxide nanoislands supported on Au(111).The focus is on the structure and distribution of Fe dopants within these nanoislands of CoO as a function of Fe to Co ratio.The DFT and STM results agree strongly and complement each other to allow for a more complete un dersta nding of the dopa nt structure trends on the nano scale.Using Fe as a marker,we first find that the stacki ng seque nee of the moire structure of the host cobalt oxide nano islands can be ide ntified un ambiguously through a combinati on of DFT and STM.Using the distinct con trast of the embedded Fe dopa nt atoms as observed with atom-resolved STM,we find correlatio ns betwee n Fe dopa nt positi on and the CoO/Au(111)moire patter n at varyi ng Fe dopa nt den sities.Formatio n of Fe-dopa nt clusters within the nano islands is investigated in detail through DFT and found to agree with the dopant patter ns observed in STM.We find that the structural effects of Fe dopants throughout the nanoislands with the basal planes and the two types of edges—the oxygen and metal edges—have different nature.Both DFT calculations and STM images show a strong preferenee for Fe dopants to be located directly on or near the oxygen edge of the nanoislands as opposed to being directly on or n ear the metal edge.Take n together,our results illustrate that Fe dopa nt incorporati on and distributi on within CoO nanoislands are highly an isotropic and gover ned by both the moire structure of the basal planes as well as nano-size effects present at the under-coordinated edges of different local geometry and chemistries. 展开更多

Nanoporous metal-based catalysts with the specific bicontinuous interconnected ligaments/pores network exhibit highly active performances in application for energy conversion, which represent a broader trend in the design of catalyst materials. These promising nanomaterials commendably provide highly conductive porous morphologies with reduced contact resistances, large electrochemical surface areas with enhanced catalytic efficiency, and controllable synthesis for regulating the performances. Thus, we highlight recent designs of nanoporous metals, alloys, transition metal compounds and hierarchical structures mainly employed in catalysis process. We discuss applied strategies to utilize characteristics of nanoporous metals in the energetic field of catalytic reactions. Moreover, development and evolution of novel controllable synthesis methods are applied in preparation of nanoporous non-noble metals and transition metal compounds. Finally, we present some outlooks and perspectives on the nanoporous metal catalyst and suggest ways for achieving alternative materials in catalysis applications. 展开更多

Role of adsorption behavior on metal build-up in urban road dust

Metal pollution of stormwater runoff can cause potential toxic impacts on the receiving water environment and human health. Effective pollution mitigation requires accurate stormwater quality modeling. Even though a significant knowledge base exists on the factors influencing metal build-up on urban roads, very limited studies have investigated how metal–particulate interaction influences metal build-up. This study quantitatively assessed the influence of particulate characteristics, together with vehicular traffic and land use, on the build-up of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cr, Ni and Cd on urban roads. The study outcomes revealed that the variability in metal build-up is highly influenced by the variability associated with metal adsorption to particulates. The percentage contribution from particulate properties influencing metal adsorption in the case of < 150 μm size road dust particles was found to be higher(Zn 44%, Cu 52%, Cr 16%, Ni 27% and Cd 45%) when compared to traffic and land use characteristics(Zn 21%, Cu 13%, Cr and Ni <10% and Cd 34%). Similar adsorption behavior was noted for metals associated with > 150 μm size road dust particles. Among different particulate properties influencing metal adsorption, effective cation exchange capacity showed a strong positive relationship with the build-up of Cd compared to other metals,highlighting the potential role of Cd in stormwater quality as a readily available metal. The build-up of metals such as Cr and Ni are highly influenced by metal oxides of Al, Fe and Mn and clay forming minerals, indicating that Cr and Ni are relatively stable in nature. 展开更多

Total knee arthroplasty is a common procedure,with extremely good clinical results.Despite this success,it produces 20%unsatisfactory results.Among the causes of these failures is metal hypersensitivity.Metal sensitization is higher in patients with a knee arthroplasty than in the general population and is even higher in patients undergoing revision surgery.However,a clear correlation between metal sensitization and symptomatic knee after surgery has not been ascertained.Surely,patients with a clear history of metal allergy must be carefully examined through dermatological and laboratory testing before surgery.There is no globally accepted diagnostic algorithm or laboratory test to diagnose metal hypersensitivity or metal reactions.The patch test is the most common test to determine metal hypersensitivity,though presenting some limitations.Several laboratory assays have been developed,with a higher sensitivity compared to patch testing,yet their clinical availability is not widespread,due to high costs and technical complexity.Symptoms of a reaction to metal implants present across a wide spectrum,ranging from pain and cutaneous dermatitis to aseptic loosening of the arthroplasty.However,although cutaneous and systemic hypersensitivity reactions to metals have arisen,thereby increasing concern after joint arthroplasties,allergies against implant materials remain quite rare and not a well-known problem.The aim of the following paper is to provide an overview on diagnosis and management of metal hypersensitivity in patients who undergo a total knee arthroplasty in order clarify its real importance. 展开更多

In the last years, endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) has evolved from a purely diagnostic technique to a more and more complex interventional procedure, with the possibility to perform several type of therapeutic interventions. Among these, EUS-guided biliary drainage (BD) is gaining popularity as a therapeutic approach after failed endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in distal malignant biliary obstruction (MBO), due to the avoidance of external drainage, a lower rate of adverse events and re-interventions, and lower costs compared to percutaneous trans-hepatic BD. Initially, devices created for luminal procedures (e.g., luminal biliary stents) have been adapted to the new trans-luminal EUSguided interventions, with predictable shortcomings in technical success, outcome and adverse events. More recently, new metal stents specifically designed for transluminal drainage, namely lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMS), have been made available for EUS-guided procedures. An electrocautery enhanced delivery system (EC-LAMS), which allows direct access of the delivery system to the target lumen, has subsequently simplified the classic multi-step procedure of EUS-guided drainages. EUS-BD using LAMS and ECLAMS has been demonstrated effective and safe, and currently seems one of the most performing techniques for EUS-BD. In this Review, we summarize the evolution of the EUS-BD in distal MBO, focusing on the novelty of LAMS and analyzing the unresolved questions about the possible role of EUS as the first therapeutic option to achieve BD in this setting of patients. 展开更多

Metals are unconventional hydrogen production materials which are of high energy densities.This paper comprehensively reviewed and digested the latest researches of the mctal-bascd direct hydrogen generation and the unconventional energy utilization ways thus enabled.According to the metal activities,the reaction conditions of metals were generalized into three categories.The first ones refer to those which would violently react with water at ambient temperature.The second ones start to react with water after certain pretreatments.The third ones can only react with steam under somewhat harsh conditions.To interpret the metal-water reaction mechanisms at the molecular scale,the molecule dynamics simulation and computational quantum chemistry were introduced as representative theoretical analytical tools.Besides,the state-of-the-art of the metal-water reaction was presented with several ordinary metals as illustration examples,including the material treatment technologies and the evaluations of hydrogen evolution performances.Moreover,the energy capacities of various metals were summarized,and the application potentials of the metalbased direct hydrogen production approach were explored.Furthermore,the challenges lying behind this unconventional hydrogen generation method and energy strategy were raised,which outlined promising directions worth of further endeavors.Overall,active metals like Na and K are appropriate for rapid hydrogen production occasions.Of these metals discussed,Al,Mg and their alloys offer the most promising hydrogen generation route for clean and efficient propulsion and real-time power source.In the long rnn,there exists plenty of space for developing future energy technology along this direction. 展开更多

Various metals, including zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr), gallium (Ga), lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and indium (In), may be released and cause contamination when scrapped end-of-life (EoL) Cu(InGa)Se2 thin-film solar panel (CIGS TFSP) is buried in the soil. In this study, we grew Brassica parachinensis L. H. Bariley (VegBrassica) in three different types of soils, namely, a commercial soil, a Mollisol, and an Oxisol, which had been contaminated by CIGS TFSP to various extents. The concentrations of contaminants in these soils were positively correlated with both the amount of CIGS TFSP added and the burial period. Plants grew well in commercial soil and Mollisol, but those in Oxisol showed prominent signs of chlorosis and died after 30 days. The bioaccumulation factor (BF) and concentration of Zn in VegBrassica grown in commercial soil with 10% of CIGS TFSP added were 3.61 and 296 mg/kg, respectively, while the BF and concentration of In of VegBrassica grown in Mollisol were 3.80 and 13.72 mg/kg, respectively. The results showed that soils were contaminated by metals released from CIGS TFSP, and different adsorption patterns were observed for VegBrassica?depending on which types of metals associated with the soil properties. 展开更多

The effects of carbon content (0.078-0.100 wt.%) on the microstructure and properties of 1000 MPa grade deposited metal produced by gas metal arc welding have been investigated. Experimental results show that the microstructure of the deposited metal was mainly composed of martensite, bainite and retained austenite. With increasing carbon content, the proportion of martensite increased, and the amount of bainite was reduced. High carbon content is beneficial to strength, but harmful to impact toughness, and thus, carbon reductions lead to the increase in impact toughness. When the carbon content was 0.100 wt.%, the lowest Charpy absorbed energy of 47 J at — 40℃ for the deposited metal was achieved, the highest yield strength of 1038 MPa was attained, and the yield-to-tensile ratio was more than 0.88, while the highest Charpy absorbed energy of 55.7 J at — 40℃ and the lowest yield strength of 915 MPa were obtained when the deposited metal contains 0.078 wt.% C, and the yield-to-tensile ratio was less than 0.85. It is concluded that bainite fraction and fine effective grain size were the dominant factors to achieve good comprehensive mechanical properties (the required strength and an acceptable toughness) of deposited metals with various carbon contents. 展开更多
