Early age at first sexual intercourse comes with many negative sexual outcomes namely: having unprotected sex on first sexual intercourse, condom misuse, high rate of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), teenage pregnancy, increased number of sexual partners, etc. In this paper, we considered some socio-demographic and cultural factors and their relationship with age at first sexual intercourse so as to reduce the numerous negative sexual outcomes of early age at first sexual intercourse using the 2018 Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey data. The analysis was made using the Cox proportional hazard model and the Kaplan-Meier plot. The result shows that some respondents started having their first sexual intercourse at the age of 8 years and about 54.4% of the respondents had their first sexual intercourse before age 17 years. The median age of first sexual intercourse is 16 years which implies that about 50% of the respondents had their first sexual intercourse on or before their 16th birthday. Education, religion, region and residence significantly affects the age of first sexual intercourse while circumcision has no significant effect. 展开更多

In recent years, the"mania for school district houses"has disrupted the housing market and undermined education equity and class mobility, thus becoming a common concern. Most existing research focus on market motivations for purchasing school district houses while neglecting the connections between school district houses and cultural and social elements in the process of class reproduction. To make up for this deficiency this article introduces the neighborhood-based cultural capital theory to explore the diversified motivations, the processes of motivation formation, and the determining factors in purchasing school district houses.Reviews and analysis of interview materials revealed that while theories based on western experience can explain the basic purchasing motivations and their formation processes, there are distinct and varied purchasing motivations in China, more comprehensive and complex forms of capital exchange, and more dynamic factors that impact purchases of school district houses.Suggestions on solving the"mania for school district houses"are also presented. 展开更多

Diabetes is chronic metabolic disorder characterized by states of hyperglycemia with disturbances of carbohydrates, fat and protein metabolism. Diabetes affects millions of people globally every day and the prevalence of the disease is on the rise due to unhealthy diet and lifestyle. The disorder usually results to chronic complications including cardiovascular diseases, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic neuropathy, foot ulcers and diabetic eye diseases that are all preventable through secondary preventive measures. Once an individual has been diagnosed with T2DM, secondary preventive approaches are essential in preventing the occurrence of chronic complications. However, lack of awareness of these measures has been cited as the common reasons for the development of complications. The study aimed to assess the effect of social cultural and economic factors on the practice of secondary diabetes prevention among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) at Consolata Hospital Nkubu and Meru Level Five Hospital between March and April 2019. A descriptive correlational study design was adopted to collect data from 357 purposively sampled participants with T2DM using questionnaires and Focus Group Discussion Guide. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 at 95% confidence interval and a significance level p ≤ 0.05. Most respondents attended Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital. Majority of the respondents were aged between 40 - 60 years. Most respondents 31.6% had secondary level of education and majority 67% was employed. Concerning secondary prevention, majority did foot examination on every visit 70.6% and BP monitoring 69.5% while 56.5% did annual eye screening. Level of income, affordability of services, health insurance cover of the patients, monthly cost of DM management and traditional beliefs in managing DM all significantly influenced DM secondary prevention at a p value ≤ 0.05. The factors need to be addressed to reduce the global burden posed by the disease. 展开更多

In the past ten years, with the rise and popularity of Internet technology,Chinese society has experienced a silent“cultural uprising,”which has formed a part of the lives and habits of contemporary ordinary Chinese at different levels, and has challenged the old pattern of cultural power and governance. How to identify this phenomenon, and carry out corresponding reforms,as an important aspect of national governance,is an urgent research topic.Based on the observation and analysis of the phenomenon of Chinese Internet culture in recent years,we can explore and summarize several key issues of China’s current cultural governance reform, and try to explain theoretically the influence of cultural prosperity on political power by retrospecting several governance experiences and lessons in history. In the era of the new Internet technology, how to truly enhance the nation^basic ability to avoid the situation of dying once and letting go.The complexity of contemporary cultural governance comes from the new technological conditions, while the difficult problem runs through the historical understanding of the entire new cultural governance capacity. 展开更多

Constraints to Tropical Forest Conservation and Successful Monitoring and Assessment of Land Uses Cover and Change: Do the Forest Definition and Administration Really Matter? 认领

We examine the constraints to conservation and to successful forestlands’ monitoring/assessments in central Togo through GIS spatial analyses and through a critical overview of the current forestry administration’s model. The major findings are that the land classification based on few inventory parameters cannot substitute for “what forest is”, rather these inventory parameters constitute a mean to sound forest management and conservation when relevantly decided. Also as these parameters measured from satellite imagery are supplemented by continuous fine management data they may consistently contribute to the classification of the vegetation cover. This helps to suggest that solution to forest degradation/deforestation, and monitoring/ assessment requires data refinement through local forest management. Else, the actual forestry administration is local communities and indigenous people’s needs biased because it has been negligent of the cultural forestry practices, the major constraints to conservation and the monitoring/assessment of forest lands. As a common pool-resource, the questions relative to forest cannot be addressed at a single environmental concerns level. Interests are multiple and various along the spectrum from the global environment level to the local environmental level that should be accounted for. Thus we recommend a reconsideration of the forestry administration model. What is required are simple policies processes to define forest management plans that promote simultaneously sustainable forest management while accounting for any stakeholder concern, importantly the cultural forestry that addresses specific local communities and indigenous people’s forest related interests. 展开更多

This article echoes Kenneth Frampton’s critical regionalism to address maintaining the values of the past into the present. For Frampton, architecture design is regionally infused due to essentially dealing with“specificity and locality”,however, remains reluctant to adopt a“universal technology”.A Masdar City’s design represents a valuable case due to casting light on the complexity embedded in intertwining the modernist technologies and a regional architecture. The case study’s analyses cited here suggest that the design of the present evolves from this complexity witnessing a deviation from a“universal technology”and a local architecture.A vernacular style of architecture has been blamed because it stitches together the“globe”and the“local”.A universal technology has been also witnessed here which yields support for the vernacular approaches embedded in a traditional architecture. What Frampton’s critical regionalism appears to overlook are the vernacular approaches that in the analysis of this article embrace a model of the design principles for the“tectonics”to be realised. The key argument brought forward in this article concerns Frampton’s critical regionalism that yet lacks a realistic approach to produce a sense within a local context, thereby needing in its theory to neatly twist the vernacular approaches with a critical regionalism’s synthesis. 展开更多

The formation of western national landscape image of China is closely related to the needs of western cultural spirit for China in this historical development stage. From the 13th to the 18th century, the West demanded that China, the"cultural other",play the role of landscape image of an ideal and beautiful country,so as to help the West establish the way forward. From the middle ages to the age of great geographical discovery to the Age of the Enlightenment,China’s political, economic, social, cultural and historical context and the cultural spirit embodied in it are exactly in line with the expectations of the European social development and cultural spirit, which helps the West to form an ideal and beautiful image of China. From the 18th century to the 19th century, the utilization function of western image of China as"cultural other"also changed, and the western image of China began to go into a period of complete reversal. With the change of the western modern cultural spirit’s expectation for China, the image of China of"imagining other","beautiful other","ideal other"and"inferior other"has been formed successively. 展开更多

The main goal of this paper is to show how the way German culture shaped itself through translation of foreign cultural elements can be seen as a paradigm for identity forming in general when one considers the aspects of imitation and re-accentuation of foreign cultural elements as a vital factor in inter-cultural communication in which translation of one system’s language into the language of another one plays an important role in the interactive process of understanding each other but,at the same time, being able to draw a distinction between one’s own cultural system and the foreign one(s).Taking the examples of Johann Gottlieb Fichte’s plan to establish a German cultural system based on a shared German language, this paper will go on to examine translation processes, such as Schleiermacher’s translation of Plato into German and Heidegger’s translation of Plato into Heideggerian terminology in order to show certain mechanisms in translation that introduce foreign cultural elements into a cultural system by altering them linguistically.Johann Fischart’s Rabelais translation will be looked at to show how a French text is turned into a uniquely self-referential German text that changes everything French into German cultural symbols to radically move away from the foreign original.Surprisingly the introduction of foreign elements into a cultural system increases the likelihood to establish a cultural identity by increasing the self-referentiality and reflexivity of the cultural system through increasing the number of cultural symbols that the system can refer to.Moreover, this self-refernetiality is beneficial to the stability of the system. 展开更多

The eastern Silk Road is a product of the mutual exchange of material culture and spiritual culture among ancient China and other countries, regions, and nations. It is the result of the contact and collision between eastern and western civilizations. It is also a strong proof that the Chinese nation implements the policy of opening to the outside world.Historically, the Silk Road served as a bridge of economic and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, closely linking ancient Chinese culture with the cultures of central Asia, west Asia,Persia, and even ancient Greek and Roman cultures. In various regions along the eastern silk road, there were many religions, but not only did they rarely fight with each other, but they were able to live in harmony and develop together. On the Silk Road, various religions developed in parallel, their doctrines absorbed and integrated, and different religions borrowed terms from each other and adopted the forms of other religions, making the silk road a cultural stage for the exchange and integration of religions, which constituted a unique phenomenon in the history of the development of world religions. 展开更多

Objectives:To examine the perceived impact of international educational experiences and cultural beliefs before and after completing a 1-year Masters of Science in Nursing program. Methods:An exploratory study was conducted among Chinese nurses studying abroad in a private medium-sized university in the United States. The 27-item electronic pre-survey was administered within 1 week of starting the program and the post-survey was administered 1 year later at the completion of the program. Results:Majority of participants(n=25)were female,23–36 years of age.Findings revealed that the perceived impact of international educational experiences assessed at the start of the program was similar to the perceived impact measured at the end of the 1-year program, suggesting that the students learned and experienced what they anticipated. There was a significant impact on cultural beliefs from the start of the program compared with the end of the program suggesting that a 1-year study abroad program does influence cultural beliefs. Conclusions:Understanding what is important to provide in a study abroad program and providing the educational experiences identified by students as impactful are avenues to help host universities best develop their programs.Findings suggested that the 1-year program can influence foreign students’cultural beliefs, yet the professional and personal impact of this change warrants further study. 展开更多
