Metal halide perovskites are emerging as new generation optoelectronic materials due to their high carrier mobility, long carrier diffusion length and large light absorption coefficient, which have broad applications in solar cell, light-emitting diode, laser, photodetector and transistors. Perovskite single crystal is an ideal platform for discerning the intrinsic properties of these materials. In some cases, perovskite single crystals are better candidates to gain high performance optoelectronics. However, the growth of perovskite single crystals is time and cost consuming, which has an obvious disadvantage for device exploration. Therefore, fast growth technique is highly desirable in not only promoting the use of perovskites in commercial applications but also facilitating deep physical investigation of the materials. In this review, we summarize thoroughly the development of fast growth of the halide perovskites single crystal. Specifically, we highlight the progress of rapid growth techniques with emphasis on the optimization control. 展开更多

The crystallographic and magnetic properties are presented for van der Waals antiferromagnetic FePS3.High-quality single crystals of millimeter size have been successfully synthesized through the chemical vapor transport method.The layered structure and cleavability of the compound are apparent,which are beneficial for a potential exploration of the interesting low dimensional magnetism,as well as for incorporation of FePS3 into van der Waals heterostructures.For the sake of completeness,we have measured both direct current (dc) and alternating current (ac) magnetic susceptibility.The paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition occurs at approximately TN -115 K.The effective moment is larger than the spin-only effective moment,suggesting that an orbital contribution to the total angular momentum of the Fe^2+ could be present.The ac susceptibility is independent of frequency,which means that the spin freezing effect is excluded.Strong anisotropy of out-of-plane and in-plane susceptibility has been shown,demonstrating the Ising-type magnetic order in FePS3 system. 展开更多

Polarized red, green, and blue light emitting diodes(LEDs) are successfully fabricated using polyfluorene and its derivatives, namely, poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene)(PFO), poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole)(F8BT),and poly(triphenylamine-co-4,7-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-co-benzo[c]thiadiazole-co-9,9-dioctyl-9 Hfluorene)(Red F).Rubbed hole transport layer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS)is employed in the devices as the alignment layer to achieve fully monodomain alignment in all polymer layers.Red F is blended with F8BT to realize the polarized electroluminescence of red light(dichroic ratio ~3.3), despite having no liquid crystallinity itself.Comparing PFO/F8BT blend to F8BT, higher efficiency of polarized emission is found due to the energy transfer.All the polarized LEDs exhibit pronounced dichroism and efficient polarized emission compared to the non-alignment regular devices. 展开更多

Dynamically reconfigurable topological edge state in phase change photonic crystals

The observation of topological edge states(TESs) revolutionized our understanding of scattering and propagation of electromagnetic(EM) waves. Supported by topological robustness, the TES at the interface between trivial and non-trivial insulators was not reflected from the structural disorders and imperfections. Recently topological photonic crystals(PhCs) were demonstrated to obtain remarkable one-way propagation of the TES, having the advantages of lossless propagation, dense integration, and high fabrication tolerance over conventional PhCs. Nevertheless, the lack of reversible switching of TES possesses significant limitations in helicity/spin filtering and tunable photonic devices. We proposed a topological PhC based on a prototypical phase-change material, Ge2 Sb2 Te5(GST225) to solve the problem. We find that at a particular frequency, the TES within the structure can be reversibly switched between "on"and "off" by transiting the GST225 structural state between amorphous and crystalline. Moreover, the topology of the PhC was maintained since the tuning of TES was achieved by varying the refractive index of GST225 instead of the structural geometry. This provides a continuous change of the spectral position of the photonic bandgap and TES by gradually crystallising the GST225. We show that the phase change of GST225 from amorphous to crystalline and vice versa can be engineered in nanoseconds. Our proof of concept may offer a platform for dynamically tuning the TESs that might otherwise be challenging to attain in photonic systems. We expect it to have potential applications for photonic devices in topological optical circuits and scatter-free one-way light propagation. 展开更多

A periodical composite material pipe is proposed based on the Bragg scattering mechanism of phononic crystals (PCs). The band gap (BG) properties of the flexural wave in this PC pipe under axial load and hydro-pressure are calculated using the transfer matrix (TM) method. The frequency response functions (FRFs) of the PC pipe under axial load and hydro-pressure are calculated using the finite element approach, and the mechanism is elucidated to illustrate the phenomenon. The results show that axial load and hydro-pressure and their combination all have a great influence on the flexural vibration proper ties. This research offers theoretical support for research on PC pipes with complex conditions and is of great significance in solving the problem of high pressure. 展开更多

This phenomenon contrasts with the conventional stable phase-separation process for ethanol-water systems with other solutes. The presence of lactose in the dissolved state was deduced to be the key factor causing spontaneous emulsification. This explains the transitional behavior of the phenomenon. Further experiments with aqueous maltodextrin solution, using the same experimental technique, confirmed this phenomenon. The mechanisms determined in this work will form the basis of porous-particle synthesis via the antisolvent vapor-precipitation technique. 展开更多

Lead-free halide double perovskites have gathered wide scientific interest since they are environmentally friendly and stable.However,compared to the lead perovskites,their optoelectronic properties are compromised.Herein we report a series of bulk lead-free mixed Bi-In halide double perovskites:Cs2AgBi1-xInxCl6(0<x<1).The Cs2AgBi0.125In0.875Cl6breaks the parity-forbidden transition and retains direct band gap structure,having warm-white light emission,with photoluminescence quantum efficiency(PLQE)of 70.3%,much higher than the PLQE of reported lead perovskite materials.Its exciton self-trapping dynamics is investigated.Meanwhile,the Cs2AgBi0.125In0.875Cl6nanocrystals and Cs2AgBi0.125In0.875Cl6microcrystals can be synthesized by modified hot injection and rapid cooling crystallization,respectively.The size effect of Cs2AgBi0.125In0.875Cl6is studied on the photoluminescence(PL)property.Additionally,the bulk material exhibits excellent stability on exposure to light,humidity and air for more than 3 months.It is a promising candidate as highly efficient warm white-light emitting material for road lighting. 展开更多

Non-equilibrium steady structures of confined liquid crystals driven by a dynamic boundary

Steady structures originating from dynamic self-assembly have begun to show their advantages in new generation materials, and pose challenges to equilibrium self-assembly. In view of the important role of confinement in self-assembly, here, we propose a new type of confinement leading to dynamic steady structures, which opens a new window for the conventional confinement.In our model, we consider the self-assembly of ellipsoids in 2D circular confinement via the boundary performing periodically stretching and contracting oscillation. Langevin dynamics simulations reveal the achievement of non-equilibrium steady structures under appropriate boundary motions, which are novel smectic structures with stable topological defects. Different from the confinement with a static boundary, ellipsoids close to the boundary have variable orientations depending on the boundary motion.Order-order structural transitions, accompanied by the symmetry change and varied defect number, occur with the change of oscillating amplitude and/or frequency of the boundary. Slow and fast dynamics are distinguished according to whether structural rearrangements and energetic adjustment happen or not. The collective motion of confined ellipsoids, aroused by the work performed on the system, is the key factor determining both the structure and dynamics of the self-assembly. Our results not only achieve novel textures of circular confined liquid crystals, but also inspire us to reconsider the self-assembly within the living organisms. 展开更多

Therefore, they are promising candidates for realizing high-performance photodetectors. Here, after a brief resume of photodetector performance parameters and operation mechanisms, we review the recent advancements in application of SMOSCs as photodetectors, including photoconductors, phototransistors, and photodiodes. More importantly, the SMOSC-based photodetectors are further categorized according to their detection regions that cover a wide range from ultraviolet to near infrared. A method was presented for calculating the melting rate of ice crystals in different axial positions in a compressor. The volume of fluid model and enthalpy-porosity model were used to simulate the melting process of single ice crystal. The result was validated by experimental data from literature. The change of the liquid fraction of the ice crystals with the axial position was obtained when the temperature distribution inside the compressor was introduced into the melting process. The liquid fraction of the spherical ice crystals was fitted with the ice crystal diameter as a variable, and the general distribution function for computing liquid fraction in any axial position in the compressor was obtained. The function of axial position as a variable for non-spherical ice crystal was also got. 展开更多

Synthesis and Characteristics of Type Ib Diamond Doped with NiS as an Additive

Large diamond single crystals doped with NiS are synthesized under high pressure and high temperature. It is found that the effects on the surface and shape of the synthesized diamond crystals are gradually enhanced by increasing the NiS additive amount. It is noted that the synthesis temperature is necessarily raised to 1280℃ to realize the diamond growth when the additive amount reaches 3.5% in the synthesis system. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) demonstrate that S is incorporated into the diamond lattice and exists in the form of C–S bond. Based on the FTIR results, it is found that N concentration in diamond is significantly increased, which are ascribed to the NiS additive. The analysis of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows that S is present in states of C–S, S–O and C–S–O bonds. The relative concentration of S compared to C continuously increases in the synthesized diamonds as the amount of additive NiS increases. Additionally,the electrical properties can be used to characterize the obtained diamond crystals and the results show that diamonds doped with NiS crystals behave as n-type semiconductors. 展开更多

Three necessary conditions for PCs to mimic the zero index materials(ZIMs) are obtained. In addition, through a comparative study of the properties for two representative PC structures with different types of Dirac cones, we find that the PC with a Dirac-like cone which meets the three necessary conditions does not behave as a ZIM in some cases. Further analysis shows that its non-zero index properties originate from the flat dispersion band.These findings clarify the fundamental physical issue of which type of Dirac cone PC can mimic a real ZIM. 展开更多

High-quality KMgF3 single crystal containing 0.5 mol% europium (Eu) was prepared by an improved Bridgman method.X-ray diffraction(XRD),photoluminescence spectra and fluorescence lifetime were measured.The results indicate the reduction of Eu3+to Eu2+in the KMgF3 single crystal.Under the excitation of 259 nm,370 nm and 394 nm,the sample has two distinct emissions of Eu2+:4f7→4f7(~363 nm)and 4f65d1→4f7(~440 nm).The substitution site for Eu ion is confirmed.The optical property investigation result shows that the Eu2+doped KMgF3 single crystal may be used as potential laser media and related materials for optical devices. 展开更多

Inclusions in large diamond single crystals at different temperatures of synthesis

The inclusions in large diamond single crystals have effects on its ultimate performance, which restricts its industrial applications to a great extent. Therefore, it is necessary to study the inclusions systematically. In this paper, large diamond single crystals with different content values of inclusions are synthesized along the(100) surface by the temperature gradient method(TGM) under 5.6 GPa at different temperatures. With the synthetic temperature changing from 1200?C to 1270?C,the shapes of diamonds change from plate to low tower, to high tower, even to steeple. From the microscopic photographs of the diamond samples, it can be observed that with the shapes of the samples changing at different temperatures, the content values of inclusions in diamonds become zero, a little, much and most, correspondingly. Consequently, with the temperature growing from low to high, the content values of inclusions in crystals increase. The origin of inclusions is explained by the difference in growth rate between diamond crystal and its surface. The content values of inclusions in diamond samples are quantitatively calculated by testing the densities of diamond samples. And the composition and inclusion content are analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) and x-ray diffraction(XRD). From contrasting scanning electron microscopy(SEM) photographs, it can be found that the more the inclusions in diamond, the more imperfect the diamond surface is. 展开更多

Existing experimental results have shown that four types of physical mechanisms, namely, martensite transformation, martensite reorientation, magnetic domain wall motion and magnetization vector rotation, can be activated during the magneto-mechanical deformation of NiMnGa ferromagnetic shape memory alloy (FSMA) single crystals. In this work, based on irreversible thermodynamics, a three-dimensional (3D) single crystal constitutive model is constructed by considering the aforementioned four mechanisms simultaneously. Three types of internal variables, i.e., the volume fraction of each martensite variant, the volume fraction of magnetic domain in each variant and the deviation angle between the magnetization vector, and easy axis are introduced to characterize the magneto-mechanical state of the single crystals. The thermodynamic driving force of each mechanism and the thermodynamic constraints on the constitutive model are obtained from Clausius's dissipative inequality and constructed Gibbs free energy. Then, thermodynamically consistent kinetic equations for the four mechanisms are proposed, respectively. Finally, the ability of the proposed model to describe the magneto-mechanical deformation of NiMnGa FSMA single crystals is verified by comparing the predictions with corresponding experimental results. It is shown that the proposed model can quantitatively capture the main experimental phenomena. Further, the proposed model is used to predict the deformations of the single crystals under the non-proportional mechanical loading conditions. 展开更多

We present a new scheme for visibly-opaque but near-infrared-transmitting filters involving 7 layers based on one-dimensional ternary photonic crystals, with capabilities in reaching nearly 100% transmission efficiency in the near-infrared region. Different decorative reflection colors can be created by adding additional three layers while maintaining the near-infrared transmission performance. In addition, our proposed structural colors show great angular insensitivity up to ±60° for both transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations, which are highly desired in various fields. The facile strategy described here involves a simple deposit!on method for the fabrication, thereby having great potential in diverse applications such as image sensors, anti-counterfeit tag, and optical measurement systems. 展开更多

In this paper, the nonreciprocal properties of a novel kind of 1D magnetized plasma photonic crystals(MPPCs) with the Fibonacci sequence are investigated. The isolation of the proposed 1D MPPCs is also used to analyze the nonreciprocal properties. Compared to the conventional 1D MPPCs with periodic structure, the nonreciprocal performance can be significantly improved.The effects of several parameters of the proposed 1D MPPCs on the nonreciprocal properties are studied by the transfer matrix method, which includes the incident angle, order of the Fibonacci sequence, plasma frequency, plasma cyclotron frequency and plasma filling factor. The obtained results show that the nonreciprocal propagation properties can be improved by increasing the values of the plasma cyclotron frequency and incident angle, but they will worsen by blindly increasing the order of the Fibonacci sequence, plasma frequency and filling factor of plasma.The peaks of transmittance also are obviously reduced. In addition, the value of isolation will increase with increasing the incident angle, order of Fibonacci sequence, plasma frequency and plasma filling factor. However, when the plasma cyclotron frequency is increased, the value of isolation will be increased at lower frequencies, but is almost unchanged at higher frequencies. 展开更多
