Detecting Fake News Over Online Social Media via Domain Reputations and Content Understanding

Fake news has recently leveraged the power and scale of online social media to effectively spread misinformation which not only erodes the trust of people on traditional presses and journalisms, but also manipulates the opinions and sentiments of the public. Detecting fake news is a daunting challenge due to subtle difference between real and fake news. As a first step of fighting with fake news, this paper characterizes hundreds of popular fake and real news measured by shares, reactions, and comments on Facebook from two perspectives:domain reputations and content understanding. Our domain reputation analysis reveals that the Web sites of the fake and real news publishers exhibit diverse registration behaviors, registration timing, domain rankings, and domain popularity. In addition, fake news tends to disappear from the Web after a certain amount of time. The content characterizations on the fake and real news corpus suggest that simply applying term frequency-inverse document frequency(tf-idf) and Latent Dirichlet Allocation(LDA) topic modeling is inefficient in detecting fake news,while exploring document similarity with the term and word vectors is a very promising direction for predicting fake and real news. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first effort to systematically study domain reputations and content characteristics of fake and real news, which will provide key insights for effectively detecting fake news on social media. 展开更多

An Attention-Based Neural Framework for Uncertainty Identification on Social Media Texts

Uncertainty identification is an important semantic processing task. It is crucial to the quality of information in terms of factuality in many applications, such as topic detection and question answering. Factuality has become a premier concern especially in social media, in which texts are written informally. However, existing approaches that rely on lexical cues suffer greatly from the casual or word-of-mouth peculiarity of social media, in which the cue phrases are often expressed in substandard form or even omitted from sentences. To tackle these problems, this paper proposes an Attention-based Neural Framework for Uncertainty identification on social media texts, named ANFU. ANFU incorporates attention-based Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM) networks to represent the semantics of words and Convolutional Neural Networks(CNNs) to capture the most important semantics. Experiments were conducted on four datasets, including 2 English benchmark datasets used in the CoNLL-2010 task of uncertainty identification and 2 Chinese datasets of Weibo and Chinese news texts. Experimental results showed that our proposed ANFU approach outperformed the-state-of-the-art on all the datasets in terms of F1 measure. More importantly, 41.37% and 13.10% improvements were achieved over the baselines on English and Chinese social media datasets, respectively, showing the particular effectiveness of ANFU on social media texts. 展开更多

Tweetluenza: Predicting Flu Trends from Twitter Data

Health authorities worldwide strive to detect Influenza prevalence as early as possible in order to prepare for it and minimize its impacts. To this end, we address the Influenza prevalence surveillance and prediction problem. In this paper, we develop a new Influenza prevalence prediction model, called Tweetluenza, to predict the spread of the Influenza in real time using cross-lingual data harvested from Twitter data streams with emphases on the United Arab Emirates(UAE). Based on the features of tweets, Tweetluenza filters the Influenza tweets and classifies them into two classes, reporting and non-reporting. To monitor the growth of Influenza, the reporting tweets were employed. Furthermore, a linear regression model leverages the reporting tweets to predict the Influenza-related hospital visits in the future. We evaluated Tweetluenza empirically to study its feasibility and compared the results with the actual hospital visits recorded by the UAE Ministry of Health. The results of our experiments demonstrate the practicality of Tweetluenza, which was verified by the high correlation between the Influenza-related Twitter data and hospital visits due to Influenza. Furthermore, the evaluation of the analysis and prediction of Influenza shows that combining English and Arabic tweets improves the correlation results. 展开更多

The adoption and use of social media has played a major role in the changes in journalists’ work. The use of these new means has become indispensable to the daily tasks and work of journalists in most news organizations. It is no longer possible to bypass these means when it comes to searching for information and news, or in production, publishing, distribution and marketing, or even in interaction with the public. The characteristics of ease, speed, immediacy, interactivity, and being free of charge that characterize them, have made them a useful technological tool, which is influential and necessary not only for the future of the journalist’s career but also for the future of the news organization itself. With the growing number of users of social media around the world, journalists and news organizations have found additional access, more important than previous channels, to access additional sources that help them market and interact with their work in a new dynamic environment completely different from previous communication models, and put audience activity at the forefront. In this study, which is part of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the author tries to understand and analyze the factors of adoption and use of social media as a new technological tool by Bahraini journalists and to identify their new role in the changes in journalism. In addition, the study attempts to examine the implications in relation to the future of the press profession and the economic model of the news organization. The results showed a clear adoption and an increased use of social media by journalists, who consider it a key element in the development of journalism, and an inevitable strategic choice for the future of the news organization. They also expressed their full awareness of the problems surrounding the issue of precision and credibility of news accessed through social media. 展开更多

Additionally, digital media can be u... There is a desideratum in the research about the interdependencies of inclusive education and media education. Digital media can facilitate individualized and cooperative learning. Additionally, digital media can be used to promote inclusion. However, which factors influence the acquisition of media and information literacy in inclusive education? Comparative international studies, e.g., the International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS), show how social challenges, such as participation and handling heterogeneity at school, can be addressed through media. In numerous studies, it becomes apparent that German teachers do not sufficiently see the potential of digital media, especially for the improvement of learning opportunities for individuals with diverse learning requirements. German teachers are not well able to apply digital media appropriately in their lessons. Teachers need to be qualified and to design modern education with accessible media. In Germany, the ratio between available computers and pupils (1:4) is far better than the rate between teaching with and without computers. According to the teacher’s reports, only 9% of teachers are using digital media daily. Approximately 40% use digital media seldom or never. It seems that the cause is a skeptical attitude towards media among teachers, especially in humanities. That may result from missing didactical competences regarding digital media. The idea of Technical Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and extending that explanatory model for teachers’ competencies on the inclusive practices builds the theoretical background for the design of joint seminars by the Research Center Youth-Media-Education as part of the Faculty for Cultural Studies and the Research Cluster Technology for Inclusion and Participation at the University of Dortmund. Prospective teachers should become familiar with this way of collaboration. Already for four years now, a teaching team from these two departments designs collaborative lectures. Background:Malignant otitis externa is an inflammatory condition of the external ear which has the propensity to spread to the skull base.It can be a difficult entity to treat as clinical presentation varies and response to treatment differs between patients.We reviewed cases of malignant otitis externa in our setup to document the epidemiology and outcome of management.Methods:This is a retrospective case review observational study from January 2013eDecember 2017.Fourteen patients diagnosed with malignant otitis externa in our tertiary referral centre were included in the study.Based on hospital protocol,empiric treatment was started.After discharge,the patients follow up visits to the hospital were also documented.Results:Otalgia was the most common symptom.Edema and congestion of the external auditory canal were observed in most cases.Diabetes was present in all patients.Three cases had associated facial palsy,and one patient had involvement of 7th,9th,10th,11th and 12th cranial nerve.Two patients with facial palsy recovered.Pseudomonas aeuroginosa was the most common organism isolated(50%).Conclusions:In our series,malignant otitis externa invariably presented with severe otalgia.Lower cranial palsies were also seen.Methods to evaluate complete eradication of disease should be centered on clinical symptoms and signs,but the measurement of erythrocyte sedimentation rate or radiological imaging may be used as a useful adjunct when there is uncertainty. 展开更多
