Objective: To investigate the relationship between beta-endorphin (β-EP), ACTH in the pathogensis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods: Radio-immunoassay method was employed to detect the concentration of β-EP and ACTH in the plasma of 30 cases of SLE and to compare it with 20 normal controls. Results: Compared with normal controls, the plasma level of β-EP in untreated SLE patients were significantly decreased (P<0.01), while there was no significant difference in plasma level of ACTH in SLE patients (P>0.05). Conclusion: The changes of β-EP and ACTH might be relevant to the pathogenesis of SLE.
