The removal of trace pollutants by activated sludge process has become a hot research topic in recent years,and it is of great significance to reduce trace pollutants. The trace pollutants were degraded by microorganism in activated sludge process through metabolism and co-metabolism processes.Redox conditions and other basic conditions affected the degradation of trace pollutants. In this study,research progress on degradation mechanisms of trace pollutants such as heterotrophic degradation,cometabolism degradation in nitrogen removal process,and anaerobic degradation were reviewed. The degradation of trace pollutants in different metabolic processes was analyzed from the perspectives of degradation pathways,microorganism and enzymes involved and intermediate products. The results showed that the aerobic heterotrophic metabolism and co-metabolism during nitrification contributed greatly to the trace pollutants removal. While a small amount of trace pollutants which were reluctant in aerobic process could be degraded in the process of anoxic denitrification and anaerobic metabolisms. In the future,degradation kinetics,intermediate products and biological toxicity of the trace pollutants in activated sludge process should be investigated from the perspective of process optimization and model simulation.
