Teaching competence is an essential element of primary school teachers＇ competence and an important index to measure the level of their professional skills. Based on an investigation of 13, 721 primary school teachers in Jiangxi province, we found that the teaching competence of primary school teachers is generally good except for some deficiencies. At the same time, the teaching competence varies among teachers with different ages, length of teaching, titles, qualifications in various majors, courses and schools. The main factors affecting the teaching competence of primary school teachers are teaching and research activities, teacher training, literature reading, teaching reference, teaching research and teaching pressure. In order to effectively improve the teaching competence of primary school teachers, schools should actively initiate teaching and research activities, strengthen teachers in-service training, encourage teachers to read extensively, promote communication and exchange, improve their teaching and research level, and alleviate their psychological pressures.
