Objective To explore the characteristic of emergency patients, and provide basic information for improving the curricula design of training for nursing specialist and rationalizing the human resource distribution in emergency department. Methods A retrospective study was performed among the 3950 cases of patients who received critical care in the emergency department of our hospital. The characteristic of these emergency patients including the spectrum of disease, sex, age and visiting time was analyzed retrospectively. Results The top ten diseases in descending order of frequency were trauma,diseases with acute abdominal pain ,cerebrovascular diseases,acute poisoning,cardiovascular diseases,diseases with dizziness or palpitation, paediatric emergency, respiratory disease, epilepsy, hysteria. The peak hours were 8：00-12：00 and 17：00-23.00. Most of patients are at the age of 31-40 years old. Conclusion We should improve the curricula design of training for nursing specialist and rationalize the human resource distribution according to the characteristic of emergency patients, so as to increase the quality and the success rate of critical care.
