Objective To explore application of laparoscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of congenital bile duct hypoplasia and cholestasis in infants. Methods The records of 18 patients with congenital bile duct hypoplasia (10) and cholestasis (8) were reviewed retrospectively. Results The diagnosis of the 18 infants was confirmed by the laparoscopic cholangiography. The biliary duct cannula and biliary duct irrigation were performed in 5 cases. Cholecyst stoma was created in 6 infants. Seven infants with congenital bile duct hypoplasia were converted to open surgery for the hepaticoportoenterostomy. Conclusions Laparoscopy is accurate and reliable in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital bile duct hypoplasia and cholestasis in infants. It is less invasive and convenient to decompress and irrigate the biliary tract in condition of cholestasis so that patient with cholestasis could possibly avoid open surgery.
